Six

A six. On a building. What does it mean? Why is it there? No idea but I found the six intriguing.

On a different subject, I will be abroad till Thursday celebrating very much like last year at the same time. Will post when I get back, to cover the lacking days. Have a great weekend everyone.

Upptown

A new trend: upp-town. Live in a hotel, consider it your apartment, leave when you want. Mobile living I would say. A hotel room where you are the permanent guest.

A trend developing faster every day - last seen in London - where we, live communting lives. I know what I am talking about as Brussels Airport has become almost a second home. But is it what we want?

Street Art

A very quick photo, taken whilst going from one commune (Uccle) to another (Ixelles). The photo is taken on Place Flagey, a very interesting and busy square in Brussels. One of my favourite cafes is there.

Currently a controversial topic of discussion, as Place Flagey has been a construction site for the past years. It seems though that the powers that be are coming closer to a solution for the end of 2008.

The Death of Omprdrailles

I do apologize for the lack of inspirational posts, but I am very busy at the moment. Real life, both personal and professional, has taken up an incredible speed.

I am hoping it will all slow down next week, when Brussels will become all quiet. Winter break is here and all schools are closed, which means most parents are also taking holiday - peace and quiet in Brussels for one week.
In the photo, a sculpture by Charles van der Stappen created in 1897. The artist was inspired by the work of Leon Cladel, Omprdailles, which he wrote in 1879.

Belgian Beer

How very Belgian. Not uncommon, I do get asked if I know of any restaurants cooking with beer. Here an example of one. Located close to the flea market (Jeu de Balle) the Restobieres Restaurant.

For those interested in Belgian beer, more info HERE.

Beauty in the Sky

Some of the best parts of Brussels can be seen ... up. Like these details on this house. Not looking up and you would have missed them. Unfortunately it wasn't such a bright day so the sky is not the best. But I hope you will enjoy the details on the house.

Phoenix 44

A little busy with the non-blogging life, plus it hasn't stopped raining for a couple of days now! Hope you enjoy the still life of Brussels. The statue, was created in 1994 by Olivier Strebelle commemorating the end of World War II.

Herge 100 years

For everyone still guessing, this year marks the centenary of Herge's birth. To celebrate this important date for Belgian culture, a new cartoon was unveiled recently (10 January) at the Eurostar / Gare du Midi station in Brussels.

Appropriately this cartoon mural shows Tintin sur la locomotive (on the steam engine train) following Bobby Smiles, a gangster from Chicago. A detailed photo can be seen here. The cartoon is taken from Tintin in America (1932). The date chosen for the unveiling? The actual birth of Tintin on 10 January 1929.

Other cartoon related posts on Brussels Daily Photo, which I know many of you liked, were:

Herge Premiere

This is just a hint to what will follow tomorrow. A premiere in Brussels, obviously linked to Herge and one of his most famous characters. Anyone guesses what this is all about? To give you a hint: Paris hosts an event linked to all this.

Door Detail 1900

Walking through Brussels, the capital of art nouveau/ art deco you will come across signs like these quite often. The only thing you have to do is look up.

I found this detail above a door in one of my favorite squares, St. Boniface, and loved it. Funny enough I have not noticed it before. The sign, and I am assuming the house, date back to 1900.

Fragments de memoirs ... the end

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Jephan de Villiers. The tube station: Albert.

The very last in this mini series, the ... bug! Actually imagined as the inhabitant of Arbonia, this massive bronze sculpture is standing against the memory wall. You'll see the background is full of scriblled text. The bug stands on top of the memory fragments of yesterday, almost guarding them.

Previously in the series of l'art prend le metro:
Eddy Merckx tube station.
Coovi tube station.
Heysel tube station.
Parvis de Saint Gilles tube station.
Horta tube station. More Horta.
Porte de Hall tube station.
Overall, posting will be a little patchy as I am off to London for work! See you next week.

Fragments de memoirs ... continues

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Jephan de Villiers. The tube station: Albert.

As promised the second in the series from this particular tube station. This time imagine walking on glass. Along the walls of this tube station, a glass box has been built and in it, the fragments de memoires - memory fragments - as the artist imagined them. Quite interesting and I have to admit a very unusual feeling to walk on ... air?

Previously in the series of l'art prend le metro:
Eddy Merckx tube station.
Coovi tube station.
Heysel tube station.
Horta tube station. More Horta.
Porte de Hall tube station.

L'art prend le metro - Fragments de memoires

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Jephan de Villiers. The tube station: Albert.

Please enter the mysterious world of Arbonia. Taking inspiration from the Forest de Soignes (the woods), Jephan de Villiers created a word in its own rights. His art in this tube station, the memory fragments can be seen in different places. Today the first in a three part series of art prend le metro.

In the photo you see the memory chariot. Encased in glass this sculpture is placed between the tram tracks and resembles in my opinion a giant brain.

Previously in the series of l'art prend le metro:
Eddy Merckx tube station.
Coovi tube station.
Heysel tube station.
Parvis de Saint Gilles tube station.
Horta tube station. More Horta.
Porte de Hall tube station.

What annoys me is ...

No, it is not the church. But what really annoys me is the constant grey sky ... every day, every seazon, grey sky wherever you look. Oh, and the rain! Don't even get me started on the rain.
In the photo, the Saint Augustine Church built in 1936.
