Bruxelles les Bains

It started a while ago ... now a photo live from the beach. And no, it wasn't this sunny this weekend, but it was at times last week. (Photo courtesy of a colleague).

Gresham Life Assurance

London 1848. It seems that Gresham Life Assurance was at that time based in Brussels as well. Today this Art Nouveau hotel ancien belongs to the Musees des Beaux Arts. Really beautiful and worth a glance.

Chocolate Bags

I always find it very funny to see how tourists behave (I am probably being watched myself when abroad). Here tourists in Brussels who obviously bought chocolate - and to be sure got the cool bag with it.

Wielemans Ceuppens

I have posted before on Wielemans Ceuppens, for what it stands today. Now a photo on what Wielemans Ceuppens used to be - a brewery, brewing (obviously!) beer. Here the old beer metal plate advertising the Wielemans beers.

L'Abbaye de la Cambre

I have not written a lot of explanations on the previous photos.

The Abbye de la Cambre (the monastery of La Cambre) dates back to 1200. In that year a certain Dame Gisele wanted to join the Rule of St. Benedict, however faced strong opposition.

Henry I grants her right in the cause and gives her a piece of land next to the Foret de Soignes (the woods). A year later the Abbaye of the Rule of St. Benedict la Cambre is established.

Today the Abbaye de la Cambre hosts the National Geographic Institute, the Higher School of Performing Arts and local monks.

Aperos Urbains

Well guess what? Suddenly the sun is out. You never know, maybe event the beach is an option. Personally I opted for the Aperos Urbains, a Friday only event. Organized in a different location every Friday, Aperos Urbains is bringing together people, wine, beer, mini cheeses for a fun afternoon. All in the open air.

Bruxelles les Bains

Starting tomorrow, the brave few (it is currently cold, grey and rainy in Brussels) will be able to go to the Brussels beach - Bruxelles les Bains. I personally have never been a fan of artificial beaches, but then again you make do with what you can.

A very busy day. From the archives, a small graffiti. Any guesses on who it could be?

L'art prend le metro - Ensor: Vive la Sociale

An interesting painting by Roger Raveel at the Merode tube stop. The artist makes allusion to both Van Eyck and James Ensor in his painting. The painting depicts the interaction between the people in the painting and their environment (the walls, the metro stop etc).

Previously in the series of l'art prend le metro:
Eddy Merckx tube station.
Coovi tube station.
Heysel tube station.
Parvis de Saint Gilles tube station.
Horta tube station. More Horta.
Porte de Hall tube station.
Albert tube station.
Montgomery tube station. More Montgomery.
Louisa tube station. More Louisa.
Bourse tube station. More Bourse.
Malbeek tube stattion.

Royal Palace

Belgium's very own royal palace. Not half as imposing as other palaces around Europe, but ... it's here in Brussels, and worth a visit. Personally I haven't yet been inside.

A new series I am working on at the moment: WC signs. This one found on the pavement of a metro station.

Lavender Witches

When I saw this group of witches coming down the street first thing I thought of was (funny enough!) lavender. I don't know why, probably because a witch dressed in purple is quite an unusual sight. The Lavender Witches.

Sabbat des Sorcieres

This weekend was spent in Ellezelles, taking part in the witches processions - the Sabbat des Sorcieres. A fun event, part of the local tradition, with loads of witches, spells, midnight fires and general party mood. Oh and a lot of local beers.

Some witch photos will follow in the days to come.

Cyclonudista 2007

Didn't actually take part in it but I did manage to take some photos of Cyclonudista 2007. (Cyclonudists please let me know if you would like the photos, as I have taken several at the end of the event).
