Door in Saint Gilles

Yesterday I was announcing the little tour we will take through Saint Gilles/ Sint Gillis. Here a wonderful door marking the side entrance to the commune town hall.

Can anyone help me out and point me in the direction of the 'door' blog, which I know many of you submitted photos to? Perhaps this door could be of interest.

Saint Gilles/ Sint Gillis

I have mentioned the Brussels communes before. All in all there are 19, which divide Brussels. Now it is time to show you (virtually) around the Saint Gilles/ Sint Gillis commune. Here a statue found in front of the maison communale - the commune town hall.

L'art prend le metro - Horta

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Victor Horta. The tube station: Horta.

More like Horta revisited.
I have posted previously on the Horta station and the wonderful iron rails, very typical of Horta and art nouveau. This time the stained glass decoration to be found at the same station.

Previously in the series of l'art prend le metro:
Eddy Merckx tube station.
Coovi tube station.
Heysel tube station.
Horta tube station.

Brussels Airport

Back to rainy Brussels, after a short time spent in rainy Milano. And one of my favorite art spots at the Brussels Airport: the corner of vintage stamp art. Wonderful. As soon as I will be back at the Brussels Airport, I will take photos of the rest of the lot.

Brussels Airport

Obviously if you have enough time at the Brussels Airport you'll come across the art in there as well. This, a robot close to the restaurant area.

Brussels Airport

The first in a series I am going to call 'Brussels Airport'. As I am currently more at the ariport leaving to/ from business than in Brussels, I thought it might be a good idea to give you a taste of Brussels Airport.

Grand Casino

Our very own Grand Casino Brussels. Opened last year, it seems to bring together play, music and food. The restaurant is said to be very good. And there is classical music played on Sundays. All combined with the possibility to become a millionaire. What more could you wish for?

L'art prend le metro - Passage Inconnu I

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Francois Schuiten . The tube station: Porte de Hal.

The first in a 2 part series: Le Passage Inconnu. This mural (cartoon mural) was created in 1993 in the style of Schuiten's imaginary cities (Les Cités Obscures).

As I have been working on this series for a while (granted only recently in an organized way), let me introduce the concept to you: when the tube was established in Brussels, the city / government decided that art should not miss from this project.

Thus every tube station in Brussels has become a small art exhibition in itself. Only Belgian resident artists have been chosen, and the art displayed includes paintings, sculptures, photos, stained glass paintings, etc. Previously in the series of l'art prend le metro:
Eddy Merckx tube station.
Coovi tube station.
Heysel tube station.
Parvis de Saint Gilles tube station.
Horta tube station.

Old Signs ... Still

Back to the Sablon, still looking up for old signs. This time above a restaurant, Les Vieux Sablons.

I always find it amazing what beauty lies above us, yet I somehow manage to spend days not looking up. Where all the treasures lie.

Le Grain de Sable

When you are in Brussels you have to stop by the Sablon area (more on that at a later date). Now there you'll find a busy corner cafe, Le Grain de Sable. A must! Quite a poze'y little place, but everyone at one point or another had a drink there. So sit down, relax and enjoy.

Apotheek

I love old signs like these. Brussels has plenty of them. The only trouble is you have to look up, which diverts the attention from the cobble stones and quite uneven side walks...

This photo is of an old Apotheek sign - a chemist/ pharmacy.

La Patrouille des Castors

Another year, more cartoon murals from Brussels. I will try as much as possible to bring you a new one every week. This week, the Patrouille des Castors, based on the aventures of a boy-scouts group. The series was created at the beginning of the 50's by MiTacq (Michel Tacq), and turns around the adventures of 5 boy scouts.

More about this in French.

Other cartoon murals on Brussels Daily Photo, which I know many of you liked, were:
Brousialle
Le Chat
Tintin
Monsieur Jean
Jeune Albert
Feather Girl
El Scorpio
Victor Sackville
Le Passage
Quick and Flupke
Blondin and Cirage
Passe moi l'ciel
Boule and Bill
There was also the unknown one which is still a mystery
Blake and Mortimer.

A very Happy New Year to everyone and I hope you will continue discovering Brussels with me. From my side many resolutions, one of them being to bring you more and better photos of Brussels.

Martial Art Girl

I am not sure if the graffiti Sunday will transfer to 2007 as well, but I came across this little girl (?) on a wall and thought it was pretty cute. Although I have to admit that chaotic graffiti left and right is probably not always the best.

What do you think of graffiti - is it art, not? I would love to read your opinions.

Boudin Blanc vs Boudin Noir

How many of your started the diet yet? I know I tend to start the year with a new diet and new resolutions. Maybe I'll keep them this year as well.

Just in case you haven't yet said good-bye to all the delicious (calorie full) food, then let me introduce you to a Belgian speciality and delicacy: the Boudin Blanc and the Boudin Noir. Personally I tend to favour the Boudin Blanc. But I'll let you decide for yourselves. Bon appetit.

Man with Balloon

I came across this strange plastic man with a balloon last year, down town Brussels. Not sure if he still is there. But I do wonder what he stands for and if this was an art project, what does it mean?

Better yet, what does it mean to you?

Palm Reading

I came across this quite strange sign above a little shop, lost on one of the sidestreets of Brussels. An interesting (I wonder if accurate) description of all the different palm shapes. If you click on the photo you will get to see the writing in detail. My favorite is the 'Succes devant les filles' meaning, lucky with girls.

Dancing Dolls

I came across this guy down town Brussels. His speciality is the pipe and making the dolls dance by tapping his feet. He always attracts a crowd so I was quite happy when he posed. Of course, I forgot to give him one of my Brussels DP cards ... next time better luck.

Audrey Hepburn and a Happy New Year!

What better way to start the year 2007 than with the best photo of the year 2006? I don't know if it was the best but it was the most viewed one and ... a surprise to many. So here it is again, my (personal) choice for photo of the year 2006: the commemorative plaque for Audrey Hepburn.

A very HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone!
