Agorafolly
As I was mentioning, the Europalia includes several events. One of them is the Agorafolly, a public display of art. Very controversial discussions at the moment as many works of art have been destroyed by vandalism yet the city doesn't seem to do anything about it ... so the artists took matter into their own hands. A very much needed initiative. Oh and btw, Belgium still doesn't have a government!

Europalia
Europalia started at the beginning of October. A cultural event meant to bring together different artists from the EU. A very interesting event, which is worth a visit if in Brussels. Here, the red curtain symbolises the division between the 'big' and the 'small' art. 'Curtain' is done by Polish artists Kaska and Went.

L'art prend le metro - Mouvements
Another tube station, another work of art: the Tomberg station and the work of Monica Droste and Guy Rombouts. Together they recreated the alphabet through curves and images in a work of art called 'mouvements' - movements.Previously in the series of l'art prend le metro:

L'art prend le metro - Le Tropolitain
Another tube station, recently discovered. I doubt I have ever been to this one before. The Gribaumont station shows the art of Roger Nellens (b. 1937), an artist fascinated with futuristic machines. This 14m long art work shows three machines, which in reality would never work (the assembly doesn't make mechanical sense) but as an art work convince you of the beauty of the Tropolitain. The artist is known to have said 'the metro - adventure - creativity'. Le Tropolitain.

Cityscape
The talk about town has been a modern day Robin du Bois : Arne Quinze. Why you ask? Well because he is bringing urban art to Brussels. Cityscape. (Oh, and he even set up a blog!)
Wood and buildings, an oasis of calm in the middle of one of the busiest streets in Brussels. I love the idea! Plus finally something exciting happening in Brussels which gets people stopping, wondering, talking.

L'art prend le metro - Ensor: Vive la Sociale
An interesting painting by Roger Raveel at the Merode tube stop. The artist makes allusion to both Van Eyck and James Ensor in his painting. L'art prend le metro - Black and White
L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Benoit van Innis. The tube station: Maelbeek.A black and white take on, the underground art in Brussels. This particular artist has painted 8 portraits at the tube level, as well as two groups of people at the entrance. This is where I took this photo. The whole station has a very cold and minimalist feel about it as the paintings and general artistic expression is on actual tiles - a very cold material I find.

Ecole de Cirque de Bruxelles
A fantastic performance from the student of the Ecole de Cirque de Bruxelles (Circus School of Brussels) took place in down town Brussels. Very talented (and passionate) students from the Ecole de Cirque de Bruxelles held an entire show on the Grand Place in Brussels.

Sablon Antiques Market
Another favorite past time in Brussels is going to the antiques market at Sablon. Sablon, is a small square with its own church right in the middle of Brussels. And every weekend, Saturday and Sunday, antique dealers set up their stands and wait ... and wait ... and wait.
More a tourist (trap?) market than anything else, yet the occasional bargain can be found. If not for antiques, the Sablon market is definitely worth a visit as it is an integral part of Brussels life. Sunday, April 22, 2007
Cubitus
Luc Dupanloup, called Dupa, is the author of this cartoon mural. The main character? Cubitus, the 'animal', more accurately a big, fat dog. Created in 1968, Cubitus is amongst the very famous cartoon characters. After years of appearances in cartoon books, Cubitus also became the main character of a Japanese show (104 episodes) and in 1994, the image of a Belgian stamp. The cartoon mural in the photo was inaugurated at the end of 1994 showing Cubitus in the place of Manneken Pis.

Wielemans Ceuppens
Recently I have been seeing photos of this building everywhere: daily press, magazines, on TV. Intrigued, I went to see what all the hype was about this Wielemand Ceuppens brewery. No longer will this building serve as a brewery. Finally Brussels will have its very own Contemporary Art Center in the Wiels (the new name of the building). Which explains the hype around this modernist building by Adrien Blomme. There will be a cinema, conference and concert rooms, a cafe-restaurant and a bookshop.
The grand opening is planned for the 25th May 2007.
