L'art prend le metro - Mouvements

Another tube station, another work of art: the Tomberg station and the work of Monica Droste and Guy Rombouts. Together they recreated the alphabet through curves and images in a work of art called 'mouvements' - movements.

L'art prend le metro - Le Tropolitain

Another tube station, recently discovered. I doubt I have ever been to this one before. The Gribaumont station shows the art of Roger Nellens (b. 1937), an artist fascinated with futuristic machines. This 14m long art work shows three machines, which in reality would never work (the assembly doesn't make mechanical sense) but as an art work convince you of the beauty of the Tropolitain. The artist is known to have said 'the metro - adventure - creativity'. Le Tropolitain.

L'art prend le metro - Happy Metro to You

I rarely cross this tube station. Closely situated to the Royal Palace, the stop Metro Parc is a hub for fonctionnaires and other 'suits'.

Which is the exact opposite to the happy and colourful art by Mendelson Mark. He wanted to bring some sunshine and humour to the working crowd though these funny sculptures. An underground surprise.

L'art prend le metro - Ensor: Vive la Sociale

An interesting painting by Roger Raveel at the Merode tube stop. The artist makes allusion to both Van Eyck and James Ensor in his painting. The painting depicts the interaction between the people in the painting and their environment (the walls, the metro stop etc).

Idon't know what these two and the ladder stand for (except perhaps modern art?) - but I thought the ensemble looked cool. Found underground, at a metro station.

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Benoit van Innis. The tube station: Maelbeek.

A black and white take on, the underground art in Brussels. This particular artist has painted 8 portraits at the tube level, as well as two groups of people at the entrance. This is where I took this photo. The whole station has a very cold and minimalist feel about it as the paintings and general artistic expression is on actual tiles - a very cold material I find.

L'art prend le metro - Nos Vieux Trams Bruxellois

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Paul Delvaux. The tube station: Bourse.

The second piece of art at the Bourse tube station is probably amongst the very well known underground surrealist paintings. Painted by surrealist painter Paul Delvaux in 1980, the painting - which stretches all along (13m long) the upper wall of the tube station - portrays old trams.

Part nostalgia, part surrealism the painting is beautiful. Trains are a constant subject of interest in Paul Delvaux' paintings, who never forgot the wonder of the first electric trams in Brussels.

L'art prend le metro - Moving Ceiling

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Pol Bury. The tube station: Bourse.

We are back in underground Brussels. This time a tube stop in the middle of the city, close to the Stockmarket (Bourse). This piece of art from 1976 by Pol Bury is composed of 75 tubes, where as part is fixed to the ceiling, the other flexible - hence the name Moving Ceiling. Just look up.

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Edmond Dubrunfaut . The tube station: Louisa.

The message of this work of art should be the connection between the earth and nature, animals, and humans. The artist took into account a recommendation form UNESCO and created this 'Earth in Flower' in 1985.

What I find a pity is that this wonderfully expressive work of art is located at one of the lesser used exists of the Louisa tube station.

100 letters arranged in such a form they make up words in both Flemish and French, they describe the tube station Louisa, they describe the Palace of Justice above, the architect himself Joseph Poelaert. A quite psychedelic arranging of letters created in 1985 by Marcel Maeyer at the Louisa tube station.

L'art prend le metro - Magic City

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Jean Michel Folon. The tube station: Montgomery.

Still staying underground. It is a delight to discover Brussels this way. The same tube station as yesterday, Montgomery hosts 3 different artists. Today Jean Michel Folon and his Magic City.

It's funny but you can easily miss this magic and futuristic sun. The mural is so big that it almost blends in, fades into the tube station. A sun set, or sun rise, in a magic futuristic city not sure if you will find good or evil on the other side. An interesting effect if you take the time to gaze into the magic city whilst going up and down the escalators.

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Pol Mara. The tube station: Montgomery.

The Andy Warhol of Belgium, Pol Mara produced art linked to publicity, cinema, sports, sex appeal, pin ups etc. He was commissioned to bring his art to the Montgomery tube station. His paintings remind of photography and show the human touch to an evironment marked by industry and technology.

Fragments de memoirs ... the end

The very last in this mini series, the ... bug! Actually imagined as the inhabitant of Arbonia, this massive bronze sculpture is standing against the memory wall. You'll see the background is full of scriblled text. The bug stands on top of the memory fragments of yesterday, almost guarding them.

As promised the second in the series from this particular tube station. This time imagine walking on glass. Along the walls of this tube station, a glass box has been built and in it, the fragments de memoires - memory fragments - as the artist imagined them. Quite interesting and I have to admit a very unusual feeling to walk on ... air?

L'art prend le metro - Fragments de memoires

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Jephan de Villiers. The tube station: Albert.

Please enter the mysterious world of Arbonia. Taking inspiration from the Forest de Soignes (the woods), Jephan de Villiers created a word in its own rights. His art in this tube station, the memory fragments can be seen in different places. Today the first in a three part series of art prend le metro.

In the photo you see the memory chariot. Encased in glass this sculpture is placed between the tram tracks and resembles in my opinion a giant brain.
