Please meet ... Hugo. We met him at the Uccle Christmas Market and he is one of the friendliest people I have so far met in Belgium. Plus he sells the best meat. Ever!

I personally think it is a little early for all this, but Christmas markets have started in Brussels.

As promised. This time I apologize but I have no idea what this cartoon mural stands for or who made it.

I took the photo in the evening, outside and the tiny white dots you see are (flashed) rain drops. So if anyone can help and tell me where this cartoon come from, I'd highly appreciate it :)

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Victor Horta. The tube station: Horta.

There is always so much material on the art nouveau in Brussels. After numerous posts, here another example this time in another subway/ tube station in Brussels. The typical iron casts by Victor Horta were introduced in the decor of the tube station and make for an interesting eye catcher.

Previously in the series of l'art prend le metro:
Eddy Merckx tube station.
Coovi tube station.
Heysel tube station.
Parvis de Saint Gilles tube station.

Look out tomorrow for some more Brussels mural cartoons.

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Francoise Schein. The tube station: Parvis de Saint Gilles.

I posted on underground Brussels (so to speak) before. Here another take along the subway/tube of Brussels. The message of the art you see above: imaginary borders of all the European countries, as well as the entire text of the Human Rights Declaration (the white letters).

Previously in the series of l'art prend le metro:
Eddy Merckx tube station.
Coovi tube station.
Heysel tube station.

Btw, not many got the answer for yesterday's post, so just for info it was Italy / Sicily/ Palermo and that's what you get: a LOT of scooters.

The black lion with a red tongue and claws is the symbol on the flag of East Flanders. As Ghent is located in East Flanders, this sign was present on all street posts.

Whilst I am abroad I will show you a glimpse of Ghent (Gent or Gand), a fantastic city in Belgium. This photo shows the Graslei, one of the most scenic parts of Ghent.

Not the usual Brussels cartoon mural.

Something light for Sunday...as I am off today on a mini-holiday. We came across these fighting goats whilst visiting La Tourelle, a goats farm just outside Brussels. Besides the little show above, we bought cheese, bio flour, and a great home made pate. More on my food blog.

Continuing with ... Waterloo, at the door of the 'Bivouac de 'l'Empereur', a little restaurant near by. Nice, expensive, very touristy. However they do serve the La Waterlootoise, a Belgian Beer you won't find anywhere else.

I just could NOT resist. This post has less to do with Brussels Daily Photo and more with ... well ... the Brussels DP being slightly famous since last week. The reference expat weekly magazine, The Bulletin, has published an article on 'Blogging for Belgium'.

Guess who is mentioned? Twice? Yours truly. First with the Brussels DP and then with my Glorious Food and Wine blog. The text reads 'Online since January 1, Brussels DP is a simple concept, beautifully executed. A single photo taken in Brussels every day. Also links to other 'city by day' sites around the world'.

The man himself. Napoleon. Defeated by the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo. Rumour has it, that after the defeat, the surrounding land became the property of the Duke of Wellington and still is so today. Which might explain the lack of real estate investement in the area. Tagged with:

Let me take you back in time. Let me take you to Waterloo. And by this I don't mean the Abba song. I mean Waterloo, where Napoleon fought for the last time in 1815.

Last weekend we visited Waterloo. So in the coming days I will show you a little piece of history in pictures. Today, the battle field map.

I very much liked this. As a statue/ work of art/ modern art is was also hidden in the back of a dead end street. So I am not sure what the purpose is for this horse and his shadow. But I do think it is perfect for Brussels DP.

I hope you will see the irony in this picture. This particular spot is famous in Brussels as it brings door-to-door a church and ... a pinup club. Literally door-to-door. It does make for really good jokes!

I always wanted to have a photo in a photo. This one is of a DVD rental shop, which had a brilliant idea: the front of their building is covered with photos of people who rent(ed) dvd's in the most funny pozes. I will have to go back one day to take a photo of the whole wall so you see what it really looks like.

Oh, cute little boxes you'll think. Well, kind of. I took this picture through the window of the Saint-Luc Institute of Architecture in Brussels. I slowly figured out Belgians are very keen on architecture, the art nouveau and art deco movement a statement to that.

The institute displays some of the works done by students, and I found this one particularly attractive. It seems a special project is also designed in relation with MacGill in Montreal.

This is most definitly an easy one. If you know your music, you'll know the man.

Currently a favorite restaurant of mine, Les Salons de l'Atalaide, is running an exhibition by Gilles Maes. The paintings are displayed in their windows, which makes for a very interesting and colorful change to the street.

I am hoping you are slowly discovering a Brussels DP trend. Every Sunday another cartoon mural treat. That is, until I will run out of 'subjects'.

Today 'Passe moi l'ciel' (Give me heaven) a series created by Janry and Stuf. The story in this series is entirely dedicated to life after death and heaven (sky). Saint Peter is keeping guard and has to break up ill-tempered angels, he is late for his game of pool, Lucifer, Christmas tree heaven, and so on. You get the picture: chaos in paradise.

Other cartoon murals on Brussels Daily Photo, which I know many of you liked, were: Brousialle, Le Chat, Tintin, Monsiuer Jean, the Jeune Albert, the Feather Girl, El Scorpio, secret agent Victor Sackville , Le Passage, Quick&Flupke and recently Blondin & Cirage.

Brussels is becoming more multi-cultural by the day. I will once have to start a mini series on the diversity that defines Brussels.

Recently I discovered this new Polish shop on my way home. And that made me think: how come we don't have a Polish DP yet?

I would LOVE to take credit for this photo. I find it absolutely brilliant. Yet it isn't mine. For today I asked Michael Uyttersprot if I can 'borrow' one of his pictures. Taken in Brussels along the train lines, a short video of the 'making of' can be seen here.

The drawing itself is done by Bonom & Lork, artists I didn't know about. Although come to think of it, I wonder if this previous Brussels DP post was not a photo of their work? If anyone could shed a light on this would be great. I am going only by the caption here, which seems to be found on a lot of Bonom & Lork work.
