Lace. Very popular in Belgium. If you ever go around down town Brussels, you are bound to come across this lady/ doll weaving lace outside a shop. A tourist attraction and at the same time a clever advertising for the lace shop behind.

Back to the Sunday cartoon mural. This time let me introduce you Blake and Mortimer.

This particular cartoon mural shows the cover of the most famous comic strip album in the series 'La Marque Jaune' (The Yellow Mark). A mysterious criminal, who leaves a yellow M behind as trademark, is carrying out spectacular thefts. Thus Francis Blake (a police captain) and Philip Mortimer (a professor) are called to solve the case.

'Brussels gets on the bike. And you?' (Bruxelles se met au velo. Et vous?)
This is how the city of Brussels started its campaign for the Cyclocity initiative. 23 bike stations are spread across the city, where bikes are available 24/7. Thus, in principle, one could visit the city by bike.
Then again this is Belgium (Brussels) and notorious for its bureaucracy. We used a similar system in Berlin and it worked perfectly fine. However in Brussels you need to first own an insurance number before you register with this service. A shortcoming for all tourists who would be most likely the first to make use of such a service.
I would love to hear if your city has similar bike services and how it works. Happy ride!

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Victor Horta. The tube station: Horta.

There is always so much material on the art nouveau in Brussels. After numerous posts, here another example this time in another subway/ tube station in Brussels. The typical iron casts by Victor Horta were introduced in the decor of the tube station and make for an interesting eye catcher.

L'art prend le metro - art takes the tube. The artist Francoise Schein. The tube station: Parvis de Saint Gilles.

I posted on underground Brussels (so to speak) before. Here another take along the subway/tube of Brussels. The message of the art you see above: imaginary borders of all the European countries, as well as the entire text of the Human Rights Declaration (the white letters).

This one is of a DVD rental shop, which had a brilliant idea: the front of their building is covered with photos of people who rent(ed) dvd's in the most funny pozes. Oh, cute little boxes you'll think. Well, kind of. I took this picture through the window of the Saint-Luc Institute of Architecture in Brussels. I slowly figured out Belgians are very keen on architecture, the art nouveau and art deco movement a statement to that.

The institute displays some of the works done by students, and I found this one particularly attractive. It seems a special project is also designed in relation with MacGill in Montreal.

I am hoping you are slowly discovering a Brussels DP trend. Every Sunday another cartoon mural treat. That is, until I will run out of 'subjects'.

Today 'Passe moi l'ciel' (Give me heaven) a series created by Janry and Stuf. The story in this series is entirely dedicated to life after death and heaven (sky). Saint Peter is keeping guard and has to break up ill-tempered angels, he is late for his game of pool, Lucifer, Christmas tree heaven, and so on. You get the picture: chaos in paradise.

I would LOVE to take credit for this photo. I find it absolutely brilliant. Yet it isn't mine. For today I asked Michael Uyttersprot if I can 'borrow' one of his pictures. Taken in Brussels along the train lines, a short video of the 'making of' can be seen here.

The drawing itself is done by Bonom & Lork, artists I didn't know about. Although come to think of it, I wonder if this previous Brussels DP post was not a photo of their work? If anyone could shed a light on this would be great. I am going only by the caption here, which seems to be found on a lot of Bonom & Lork work.
