Brussels Photo: Monday, 30 October 2006

In the never-ending series of Brussels statues, here is one in the honour of Edith Cavell. A British nurse, who served in the First World War, she was executed and since became a popular martyr and heroine. Her link with Brussels is quite strong, as she was appointed matron of a hospital in Brussels.

A statue of her can be seen in London in front of the National Portrait Gallery. Maybe Ham could provide us with a Brussels-London link? :)

Glad to see this memorial since nurses' contributions are not always acknowledged. Thanks for the information.

I just love this. It's a beautiful shot. The postures of the figures and the aging patina of the metal convey the sorrow very well. (Is that your pocketbook or camera bag sitting there?)
