A classic wall commercial dating back to 1846, advertising a clothes cleaner, 'De Geest'.

Back from almost a week of experiencing the Route des Vins in Alsace ... where you can guess, we tasted a lot of the local wines (as listed above: Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris and the Muscat).

I will write more in-depth about Alsace on Glorious Wines. And tomorrow, it is back to Brussels. Promise!

As we were away to Alsace we only caught up with the news back here in Brussels. Our thoughts go out to all the families suffering through the disaster and loss in Indonesia.

And, whilst finishing the rally, but starting a new week, I leave you with this peaceful village picture where you can almost hear the time go by.

A big thank you again to Denton from Greenville DP who will be taking care of the Brussels DP - so to speak ...

A faithfull friend during the rally ... whilst discovering strange little things in the oddest places: quiant village gardens! Hmmm, and they say village life is boring :)

Wavre: between donkeys and horses, this set of table and chairs seemed so out of place yet so at home.

To add to the discoveries during the rally, Rixensart seems to be home to the longest pencil in the world - as confirmed by this Guiness Book of Records note ... Who would have guessed?

First stop on our rally the Ferme des Templiers, dating back to the 17th and 18th century. Belonging to the Knights Templar, and later to the Knights of Malta, the farm is pure history.

The clock of yesterday welcomes you into the inner garden. To add to the historical flavor, an angel is guarding the flowers, and the back walls of the farm read 1615.

Wednesday, 24 May 2006

Let me take you now on a trip through time and history.

Last weekend I participated at my first ... rally. The Ardennes Brabanconnes (a region of Belgium) organized a historic and gastronomic rally in and around 5 villages of the region: Chaumont-Gistoux, Grez-Doiceau, Ottignies-LLN, Rixensart and Wavre.

As I will be away for almost a week - following the Wine Route of Alsace - I will let you discover some of the beautiful parts of Belgium, outside Brussels. Almost like taking part with your old timer at the rally :)

I sometimes divert my attention to one thing in particular, and it seems everywhere I look I see just that: interesting and amazing doors handles. There was the lace door handle, the snake door handle, and just recently the child door handle.

This time a more modern example, of a fluid mix of colours. Especially for MoonSoleil from Saarbruecken DP who, like me, seems to like discovering these little details.

I posted many times on Brussels and art nouveau movement it is known for. Some beautiful examples are these stairs, the Victor Horta house, and the current exhibition on art nouveau.

Yesterday I came across this door and I just couldn't resist. The details are fantastic.

The graffiti Sunday trend was started by Sebastian from Trier DP ... and here is another contribution from Brussels, on this rainy Sunday. A close-up can be seen here.

Models in distress. Perhaps they are waiting for a designer to come along.

I passed by this record store and found the idea of only red covers to be great. Anything you like?

I posted on different door knobs before and I am still fascinated by them. Here another fantastic example.

Every year, Saint Gilles - a commune of Brussels - is organizing the Parcours des Artistes. The concept? Artists expose in private houses, gardens, on the street, in cafes and garages. The whole event is free of charge and everyone in the commune participates. I personally think it is a fantastic event. Something to do this weekend perhaps?

Especially for Piu from Oulu DP who is an artist as well and asked for some more pictures from this event: another light, some paintings and an African artist facing his works of art.

Just in case you are wondering, this is what a sunny Friday after work looks like in Brussels. All music, beer, and fun!

Back to weird Brussels now ... A very 'space' bench I came across. Not only does it look alien (anyone knows what it could be?), but there are also very strange noises coming through the red button you see in the middle ... alien invasion?

And another design related post. Who said we are not hip and trendy here in Brussels? The Mode Design Brussels 2006 - a whole range of design related affairs I will most definitly be taking of advantage of.

Well, no, actually I do not (know). Must be something for the shoe designer in Bazainville? :)

The world was rushing by, yet nothing seemed to phase this girl. I just hope we can all have such a quiet and peaceful week ahead :)

Sunday, 7 May 2006

On my way home from a quite late party on Friday night, we came across this little man. Needless to say the different positions and lightning we tried till the picture was complete. You have to understand, this little man is a tiny drawing on an electricity box.

Do you sometimes have that feeling that we are just not doing enough? I have never been a hard core activist, but there are principles I stand for and Human Rights is one of them. That's why I admire Amnesty International.

For something different this weekend, why not go to the Festival de Court Metrage taking place here in the heart of Brussels?

Now ... one bottle of Prosecco for the person who guesses where my Italian trip was :) . I thought I'll skip the usual Brussels post for one day and bring some Italian sunshine to this blog!

First there was Manneke Pis. And then there was gender equality and political corectness. And here is Janneke Pis (the peeing girl). I would love to know how many of you who visited Brussels ever came across her? :)

Thank you (again!) to Denton who will 'push the buttons' on the Brussels Daily Photo. I am in Italy for one week (click here to visit Rome or Venice) so I hope you will enjoy the photos I prepared for you in the coming days. Ciao :)

Just to give you a taste of the Grand Place ... once I get one of those fancy cameras, trust me there will be plenty more pictures of the amazing architecture of the Grand Place.
