The fishmarket in down town Brussels. Crazy thing about it: there is no fish and no market! But some lovely (and truly expensive) restaurants in the area.

But there used to be a fish market! The basin between the Quai aux Briques and the Quai au Bois à Brûler (part of which is now flooded every December for the ice skating rink) used to be the port where fish was unloaded and sold, which is why all the fish wholesalers and restaurants sprang up around there. It's what is called a "lieu-dit", like the Bascule (where there used to be a weighbridge) or Ma Campagne (supposedly named after an inn of that name; the original things these are named after are no longer there, but the names live on.

David, I can only relate :)

Mike, welcome. I already blogged some chocolate on Saturday 14 January, but will look out for some more (any excuse to go to a chocolate shop!).

Qaminante, I really appreciate all the historic input. Unfortunately I now know the places just by names, although I would have loved to have seen them.

Sidney, I'll do the same. Thanks.
